Most international visitors reach Shanxi through **Taiyuan**, the provincial capital and the main rail and air hub for journeys through the province. The best route depends on where you enter China, but high-speed rail is usually the simplest choice from Beijing or Xi'an, while a domestic flight can be more practical from Shanghai or southern China.
Schedules and fares change frequently. Treat the times below as planning ranges and confirm the exact service on China Railway's official **12306** platform or the airline before booking.
Beijing to Taiyuan
High-speed trains run between **Beijing Fengtai or Beijing West** and **Taiyuan South**. Depending on the train and departure station, the journey generally takes around two and a half to four hours.
Rail is usually easier than flying for this route because both ends connect directly to urban transport. Check the departure station carefully: Beijing has several major railway stations, and they are not interchangeable.
Xi'an to Taiyuan
High-speed rail from **Xi'an North** to **Taiyuan South** commonly takes around three to four hours. This makes Xi'an and Shanxi practical to combine in one overland itinerary.
When comparing trains, look at both the total journey time and the number of intermediate stops. The fastest service is not necessarily available at the time you want to travel.
Shanghai and southern China
From Shanghai, Guangzhou or Shenzhen, compare a direct flight with the available rail itinerary. A flight usually saves time over these longer distances, although weather and airport transfers can reduce that advantage.
Direct services and seasonal frequencies change. Confirm the operating carrier, baggage allowance and arrival time before building a same-day connection.
Taiyuan Wusu International Airport
**Taiyuan Wusu International Airport** (TYN) lies southeast of central Taiyuan. Official taxis and app-based ride services are available from the terminal.
**Taiyuan Metro Line 1**, opened in 2025, connects the airport with Taiyuan South railway station, Taiyuan railway station and central stops including Wuyi Square and Dananmen. At Dananmen, passengers can transfer to Line 2. Check the day's first and last train times if arriving early or late.
Taiyuan South Railway Station
**Taiyuan South** is the city's principal high-speed rail station. Metro Line 1 links it with the airport and central Taiyuan. Taxis and city buses also serve the station.
Allow extra time for security and finding the correct waiting hall. During national holidays and major travel periods, stations can be exceptionally busy.
Booking train tickets with a foreign passport
China Railway's official English-language **12306** website supports registration and ticket purchase using a valid foreign passport. The passport used for booking is also the identity document for the journey, so carry the original document to the station.
Third-party booking services may offer a different interface or customer support, but their fees and conditions vary. Check the final price and change or cancellation rules before paying.
Before you travel
- Confirm the exact departure and arrival station; many Chinese cities have several. - Check live schedules rather than relying on an old timetable or screenshot. - Carry the original passport used to buy the train ticket. - Leave extra time during Lunar New Year, Labour Day and National Day travel periods. - Avoid scheduling an important onward connection immediately after a separate flight or rail booking.
From Taiyuan, routes continue north toward Datong, the Yungang Grottoes, the Hanging Temple and Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, and south toward Pingyao. A well-paced itinerary often includes at least one night in Taiyuan, especially if you want to visit Jinci before continuing across the province.
