About Heritage Shanxi

Rooted in Shanxi.
Open to the world.

Heritage Shanxi is an international cultural exchange studio dedicated to the architectural heritage of Shanxi.

Many of us were born and raised here. We began Heritage Shanxi with a simple wish: to give something meaningful back to our home, to help more people understand and value its heritage, and to share the depth and vitality of Shanxi with the world.

Our beginning

It began with a love for home.

For us, Shanxi is not a destination waiting to be discovered. It is home, and a place we continue to understand more deeply.

Across the province are timber buildings, temples, murals, painted sculptures, historic cities and traditional villages shaped over many centuries. Together, they preserve more than architectural history. They hold stories of belief, craftsmanship, everyday life and cultural exchange.

Yet beyond Shanxi, many of these buildings and the stories they hold remain little known.

Through research, storytelling, journeys and international exchange, we hope to help more people see Shanxi with greater clarity. We also believe that attention should be thoughtful and respectful, and that it should contribute positively to the long-term care of the places that inspire it.

Our purpose

Let the world see Shanxi, and through Shanxi, understand China.

Historic buildings are not static backdrops, nor are they simply collections of dates, structural elements and styles.

A building can reveal how people understood the world, worked with materials, organised daily life, and brought belief, art and technology together within a single place.

We want to build a bridge between specialist knowledge and public understanding: respecting evidence and scholarship while explaining, with clarity and humanity, why these buildings matter.

Our aim is not to turn Shanxi into a checklist of attractions. We want to help people slow down, understand what they are seeing, and form a more meaningful connection with its places, histories and living communities.

What we do

Four ways of turning local knowledge into meaningful understanding.

01

Research & interpretation

We bring together material on Shanxi’s architecture, art and history, translating specialist knowledge into accurate and accessible stories for an international audience.

02

Cultural exchange

Through writing, talks, visits and collaborative projects, we connect people from different countries and disciplines around Shanxi’s cultural heritage.

03

Thoughtful journeys

Working with experienced organisations in Shanxi, we develop journeys centred on architecture, history, art and local culture. We care not only about where a journey goes, but also about the ideas that shape it, the pace at which it unfolds, and the responsibilities involved in delivering it.

04

Responsible attention

We are not a conservation institution, but we believe responsible communication can help people understand why conservation matters. We respect access rules, photography restrictions, scholarly work and local communities. We want every story we share and every visit we help shape to begin with understanding and respect.

This work is shaped by many people.

Heritage Shanxi is growing through a network of collaborators across places and disciplines.

They include Uniechoo LLC in the United States, travel agencies and cultural exchange organisations in Shanxi, as well as scholars, university researchers and photographers whose work spans Chinese architecture, history, religious art and cultural heritage.

They contribute specialist guidance, editorial review, local knowledge, photography, cultural interpretation and travel expertise. Their experience and different perspectives help us present Shanxi with greater accuracy, depth and responsibility.

We value every contribution of knowledge, time and trust. Wherever possible, we clearly identify sources, image rights, specialist contributions and the distinct responsibilities of those involved in each project.

Welcome to Shanxi.

We hope Heritage Shanxi can become more than a website about a place. It can be a window through which someone first encounters Shanxi, and a bridge connecting travellers, researchers, photographers, cultural organisations and everyone who cares about architectural heritage.

Whether you are considering a journey, exploring a research or cultural collaboration, or simply hoping to understand Chinese architecture more deeply, we would be glad to hear from you.

Shanxi holds many stories that deserve to be told with care. We hope you will join us in helping more people see, understand and value them.
